The Taylormade P790 Irons, could they be the players iron you’ve always wanted with the forgiveness you need? In this post we will cover our review and the specs of the P790s
Testing Out Top Rated Irons Against P790s
I wanted to try out all the best clubs for 2020 and so I looked at the Golf Digest hotlist and picked out the ones that I felt would match my game. I went to the PGA Superstore, and I tried out a bunch of the ones from that list including the P790s, Cobra King Forged Tec, Mizuno GTX 919, Titleist T300, and T200, and more.
After testing out these irons, the first thing I looked out for was feel. The two irons that felt the best were the Mizunos, and the P790s. As far as the data goes and what performed best for me, it was the P790s and the Forged Tec from Cobra. I obviously ended up choosing the P790s that seemed to cover everything I needed.
Taylormade P790s Specs
Let’s talk about the head of the club. The P790s have their trademark speed foam injected inside the club. It’s supposed to help speed while maintaining that great feeling. They have a forged face, that provides that really soft, buttery feel when contacting the ball. The P790s include a low profile tungsten weighting which helps you launch the ball higher, and makes it a little more forgiving,
One thing to note about the 2019 P790s, they are a little stronger lofted than traditional clubs, and the shafts are actually slightly longer than the 2017 P790s. Often, manufacturers will tweak the specs on their newer clubs to increase speed or distance.
Taylormade P790 Performance & Review
The P790s are legit great clubs. There is a reason they have been popular for so long, and that Taylormade decided to come out with multiple versions of the clubs.
They are pretty pricey, and tend to hold their value when buying/selling used. Brand new, a full set is almost $1600, and buying used can still be right around $1000-1200.
For what these clubs are, they are pretty forgiving. However, we have found that they tend to really bounce off the face when hit perfectly in the sweet spot. They can launch easily over greens, especially when you first use them.
You can’t really beat the feel of these irons. These irons will feel a lot better than your traditional cavity back irons, and give you a more traditional players iron feel. High handicappers can use these clubs, as well as low handicappers.
We hope this post helped you in your decision on whether to purchase or test out the P790 irons for yourself! Let us know in the comments your thoughts about the P790s, or if you’ve found a better player’s distance iron!
